Charges reduced in Albany shooting
Charges filed against James Brawley in connection with an Albany
shooting early Sunday were reduced Monday at his arraignment in
Linn County Circuit Court.
Fun in the sun
Although official visits to see the lambs at the Oregon State
University Sheep Center ended March 3, it doesn?t mean that lambing
season is finished. As Democrat-Herald photographer David Patton
discovered Monday afternoon, it?s in full swing. There are plenty
of lambs still to be seen throughout Linn and Benton counties. The
two youngsters above were enjoying the springlike weather, racing
through a field off Three Lakes Road south of Albany, while another
preferred nuzzling with its mother in the sunshine. Although the
sun had the lambs in a playful mood Monday, many mid-valley
residents woke up this morning to frosted windshields and even snow
flurries, reminding everyone that winter isn?t over. The National
Weather Service said more snow isn?t likely as daytime temperatures
rise into the 50s, but there is a 50 to 80 percent chance of rain
predicted through Friday. Spring doesn?t officially arrive until
Saturday, March 20.

Listen up!; Rhymes get real during local teen poetry class
On Friday, Summit High School senior Naomi Wright stood in front of a packed audience at PoetHouse Art and shared a poem about her daddy issues, as she put it. The piece chronicled the three years she's spent with no contact from her father, breaking it down into number of soccer games missed and cookies eaten. When she finished, the crowd of mostly adults cheered loudly as Naomi grinned. She had just shared something utterly personal in a very public forum.
Not much sugar, plenty of spice; Savory baking uses familiar techniques, but ...
If you only bake desserts and breakfast sweets, you're missing out. There's a whole world of savory baking waiting for you that has nothing to do with sugar. It's all about herbs and spices, mushrooms, cheeses, vegetables, nuts and meats.?Savory baking is for people who like to cook, but would like to bake without the sweet component, so it's more of a combination of baking and cooking,? said Mary Cech (pronounced ?check?), author of ?Savory Baking.?
Ready, aim ? dodgeball; New league allows players to take the court and let go
Let?s face it. Dodgeball is brutal.Though many of us can recall visions of fifth-grade gym class, where the slam jam resulted in only a few casualties, adult dodgeball looks a lot different. When 150 to 200 pounds of muscle launches a heavy 8.5-inch-diameter rubber ball through the air and that ball connects with a body part, it?s going to hurt a little.
