Beavers Back On Track With 76-58 Win Over Utah
Courtesy: OSU Sports Information
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. --- Oregon State relied on its tenacious defense by forcing 23 turnovers with 16 steals and Joe Burton filled up the box score with eight points, 11 rebounds, five assists and a career-high six steals as the Beavers cruised to a 76-58 win over Utah on Saturday afternoon at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
"Historically, defense has been the best part of our game," Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson said. "This year, because we have been so prolific on the offensive end, our defense has gotten a little bit less attention and less focus. So it's excellent to see these guys play and be able to switch in and out of defenses the way they are supposed to and force the other team into turnovers. That's how you get good."
The Beavers (15-8, 5-6 Pac-12) got 20 points and four steals from Jared Cunningham, 14 points from Devon Collier and a career-high seven points from senior team captain Kevin McShane to win for the fourth time in their past five games, including a 2-1 record in their last three road games.
"We really needed to have a road win because it's hard to get them in this conference," Robinson said. "We had a couple of close losses that we have to make up for so we can't afford to lose games that are winnable. When you get a lead like we had and let it get cut to eight, we had to make sure we kept the pressure on them. Its' really important to get a win on the road."
Oregon State led 16-15 with 9:25 to go in the first half and then turned their defense up a notch to go on a 13-0 run with Cunningham scoring seven of the points and take a 29-15 lead. At the break, the Beavers had their season-average with 10 steals and forced 13 Utah turnovers to lead comfortably, 38-25.
Burton had five of his six steals in the first half and dazzled the crowd of 8,404 with a couple of hook shots that would have made Kareem Abdul-Jabbar proud. When asked about his stat line, Burton had a slight grin and gave a very humble answer.
"My game comes from the team and my team helped me get where I was and my stat line looks good because of the team," he said. "I'm just grateful to be on the team with all of them and they helped me out. It's probably the best stat line I've had, except in high school when I had the quadruple-double, but this is my best in college."
Robinson knew how important Burton's game was for the team. "As well as Jared played, Joe was the most valuable player for this game," the fourth-year head coach said. "He had a couple of miscues right at the beginning of the game but after that it was like he was trying to make up for that for the rest of the game and just carried us in all aspects of the game - rebounding, scoring, defense, assists."
Cedric Martin led Utah (5-17, 2-8) with 19 points and Jason Washburn had a big game for the Utes with 15 points, six rebounds and eight blocked shots.
After three straight road games the past two weeks, the Beavers return to Gill Coliseum to play Washington State on Thursday at 7 p.m. in a game that won't be televised but will be streamed live on Beaver Nation Online.
Pit Bull and Chihuahua Couple in Eugene
By Kelsey Card
EUGENE, Ore. -- We've all seen the odd couple pictures of animals gone viral on the internet, but a Pit Bull and a Chihuahua? Bob and Irene were found in the streets of L.A. together, and have been inseperable ever since.
They were picked up and taken to Agora shelter and quickly became staff favorites. Diane Moore says it was due to their sweet demeanors and their unique bond.
Luv-A-Bull Rescue in Eugene quickly marketed the cute couple. Moore, a sucker for fostering, took them in for the rescue. Believe it or not there have been countless similar stories within rescue circles, on the internet, there's even a facebook page dedicated to Chihuahua Pit Bull pairings.
"Chihuahuas and Pit Bulls are the two predominate breeds that you'll find in shelters, especially in California or New York," says Moore.
Liesl Wilhardt, founder of Luv-A-Bull rescue, primarily rescues Pit Bulls and small breed dogs from California shelters. She says these unlikely friends find comfort in one another, in an unpredictable and uncaring world. Her own pack includes three Pit Bulls and three Chihuahua mixes who are all best friends.
Of course, not all Chihuahuas love Pit Bulls, and vice versa. But fate brought Bob and Irene together and now all they need is a loving home.
The odd couple loves people and of course each other. If you're interested in adopting, they only come as a packaged deal. For info click on the "newslinks" tab.
More Sun Than Clouds on the Way
Melissa Frey's Forecast Discussion
High pressure is dominating the Pacific Northwest. For us that means we're sitting under clear skies with warm temperatures by day, cold temperatures by night and not a rain drop in sight.
Just off shore, it's a completely different picture.
There are currently three storms brewing in the Pacific, but the jet stream is shooting straight north, pulling these storms into Canada. This keeps them from making landfall in the U.S., and also weakens them by stretching them apart.
One will get close Sunday morning, but all we'll see is a few high clouds.
The next will try and move into southern Oregon, but will be too weak to give us much more than clouds and a few isolated showers.
Wednesday through Friday will again be sunny and mild. Our best shot at showers this week will be Saturday.
Have a great rest of your Weekend!

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- The USDA reports Oregon children have the highest rate of food insecurity in the nation, meaning those kids don't know where they will get their next meal.
On Saturday, local disc golfers held a tournament to help Lane County combat the problem of hunger.
A group of over 100 players met up in Cottage Grove to kick off the inaugural Eugene Disc Golf Club Ice Bowl.
All entry fees and canned food and money donations went to FOOD for Lane County.
Organizers estimate the drive raised $1,800 and over 1,000 pounds of food.
Super Bowl is Second Biggest Day of Consumption After Thanksgiving
By Lauren Mickler
EUGENE, Ore -- Hot Mama's wings in Eugene is preparing for a heavy rush of to-go orders for the Super Bowl on Sunday.
They say they're expecting people to eat in and even more people to order take-out.
"We're expecting a big crowd and we have a big book of to-go orders waiting already to rock out tommorrow. People are definitely excited about wings for Super Bowl food," said kitchen manager Johnny Roberts.
Hot Mama's isn't the only one whipping up wings, the National Chicken Council reports that Americans eat about 1.2 billion chicken wings on Super Bowl Sunday. That's only a portion of the average 1200 calories each fan consumes between kickoff and the end of the fourth quarter.
Dieticians suggest if you're going to stuff you face, make sure to mix in plenty of water with you food and beer, and try and squeeze in the wave or a touch down dance during the game to burn some calories.
EPD Releases Name of Burglar Killed in Home Invasion
By Jessica Debbas
EUGENE, Ore. -- Police say Shawn Jeffrey Connelly, 44, of Springfield was the man killed Thursday afternoon while they say he intruded a home in South Eugene.
Lane County Jail has a mugshot on file of Connelly but details on why and when he was previously lodged there were not available Saturday.
Eugene Police say Connelly and Darrin Dubouch, 39, burglarized the home at 3307 Stoney Ridge Road.
The 27-year-old resident and sole occupant inside the house allegedly shot Connelly, killing him.
Dubouch fled the scene and was caught about a quarter mile down the road.
Dubouch, from Coburg, was arrested on robbery and burglary charges.
Eugene Police say this wasn't a random home invasion and believe drugs could have been a motive.
KEZI reported back in April of 2004 that Connelly was charged with robbing a Washington Mutual on 11th Avenue.
According to Eugene police logs, Connelly was pulled over 12 hours before he was shot and killed Thursday.
The report says there was a search at Charnelton and W. 6th Alley in downtown Eugene, but Connelly only received a warning.
Connelly's Facebook page says he's from Fortuna, California and studied at Lane Community College.
